Ponni Arasu

Dr. Ponni Arasu is the Research Manager of Noolaham Foundation. She studied at Lady Shriram College for Women, Delhi University for her Bachelors (Honours) in History, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi for her Masters in History and the University of Toronto for her PhD in History with a focus on Tamil Studies, South Asia Studies and Women/Gender Studies.
She is a qualified lawyer with a Bachelors in Law from Bangalore University. She worked with the Alterative Law Forum in Bangalore as a Human Rights Legal Practitioner and Researcher. She is a trained actor who has been on the stage since the age of 12 and has been active in the Tamil theatre context primarily with the Marappachi Feminist Theatre Collective in Chennai.

She has, for the past 15 years, worked with a range of institutions groups and collectives in Batticaloa, Colombo, Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore and Toronto as a researcher, activist and artist. She is currently affiliated to the Culinaria Research Institute at the University of Toronto, Scarborough and the Open University of Sri Lanka as a Researcher in Sri Lanka.

In this role, she will create, build and establish scholarly research offices with Tamil-speaking Sri Lankan researchers. She will help establish Noolaham as a grass-root level research institution in Tamil Studies, South Asia Studies and other such international scholarly networks. She will organize public scholarly engagements with Noolaham’s existing and emerging archival collection.
