Job Title  Digital Library Officer – EAP1450: Caste, land, and labour in Jaffna: a survey and digitization project in Sri Lankan agrarian history
Reports to  Digital Library  Manager

Period of Assignment One year (Probationary period of three months, and possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs)

About Noolaham Foundation 

Noolaham Foundation (NF) is a legally registered (GA 2390), non-profit, non-partisan, secular entity, founded to provide enhanced access to information sources and foster knowledge-based development in Sri Lanka. Noolaham Digital Library (noolaham.org) and Noolaham Multimedia Archive (aavanaham.org) maintained by the Noolaham Foundation serve as Learning Centers incorporating local knowledge. The digital library and archive function as a repository for various community institutions and fulfill the information needs of students, researchers, historians, activists and the public.

Project Summary

This 12-month pilot project will survey and digitize privately held records relating to caste, land ownership, and agricultural labour in Sri Lanka’s Jaffna Peninsula, created prior to the island’s independence in 1948. The survey seeks manuscript (paper and palm leaf) and printed material relating to the management and ownership of land, labour contracts, and agricultural records. Digitization will commence with the manuscript collection of William Digby (1849–1904), a late-nineteenth century British author and political organizer who was a vociferous advocate for the reform of British policy in India and intervention in South Asian agrarian poverty.

Job Summary 

The main responsibility of the Digital Library Officer is to ensure and upload all the documents on the Noolaham website in a manner that is acceptable and appropriate for the readers. Furthermore, he/she is responsible for ensuring that all documents are uploaded consistently and thoroughly. Sound knowledge regarding the documents is very important because even a small manuscript available should be properly identified and uploaded on the website.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensure that well-modeled metadata is used efficiently and appropriately
  • Ensure that the documents on the Noolaham website are uploaded in accordance with organizational policies and regulations
  • Ensure the proper documentation of all verification details and changes
  • Ensure proper details and contents of the documents in the website
  • Take steps to complete each of the collections in the Noolaham website
  • Ensure that the content in the backup and the content in the website are maintained in the same manner

Essential Qualifications: 

  • BA in the fields of Social Science/ Media and communication / Art and History  
  • Completed Library Science level 1 or 2 or any other equivalent qualification to Library Science
  • Having knowledge and experience on using computer and websites (Digital and Information Literacy)
  • Ability to type Tamil and English at a certain speed without grammatical errors 
  • Having interest and experience in reading books and protecting books 

Additional Qualifications:

  • Having Library and archival experience
  • Having knowledge and experience on scanning standards and specifications and metadata
  • Having knowledge related to copyrights of documents
  • Having knowledge on book publisher, author and other details
